Now that you have some tweet food on your Twitter table, it's time to go
Follow some people. Following people first is the way to start getting
people to Follow you because normally what happens is that people will
oblige a Follow by Following you back. Here are 5 ways to start finding
people to Follow:
- At the top of your Twitter page is a button, "Find People." You can go here to find out if any of your friends, family, or co-workers are already on Twitter. You have the option to also Invite others to join or have Twitter see if anyone in your email address books are signed up. There's also a Suggested User page which is filled primarily with celebrities and huge media sites like the New York Times or ESPN.
- Go to Twitter Search, and search for a key term that interests you. For example, if you are into muscle cars or are gluten-free, search for those terms, and the results will pull up everyone who is talking about those subjects. Clicking on their avatar will take you to their page where you can check them out and hit the Follow button.
- While you are at someone's Twitter home page, you will notice on the right hand side a group of Avatars of the people that person is Following. People tend to follow others like themselves, so the odds of you being attracted to these people's Twitter accounts will be high.
- Twellow is basically like a Twitter Yellow Pages. What's cool about Twellow is that there are categories and sub-categories. For example, if you go to the Health section, there are sub-categories for things like Fitness, Personal Development, Doctors, and Nutrition. You can find people who tweet on specific subjects you like. And while you're at Twellow, be sure to register yourself.
- We Follow is a user powered Twitter directory and like Twellow there are categories like celebrities, politics, music, entrepreneurs. We Follow also has a listing for the most popular Twitter hashtags which again is another useful thing to help you find kindred spirits and interesting people to Follow. And again, while you're at We Follow, be sure to register yourself there too.
As you go to people's Twitter homes, do take the time to read their bio and their stream of tweets. If you see something interesting, do reply to the tweet as this will help you to start building a rapport with that individual. A big part off the fun of Twitter is actual interaction with others, and on Twitter most people are super friendly which so far has been my personal experience.
Reply by simply moving your mouse over to the right had side of the tweet box where a curved arrow will appear. Click on that curved arrow and a fresh box will appear for you to write your tweet response. For example, I went to visit @kimstowe, and she asked for travel recommendations in Scottsdale, AZ. I wanted to tell her about a great Mexican restaurant that is a must try, so I'd hit the reply arrow and tweet her my suggestion.
There are more ways to find people to Follow, but for now we don't want to overwhelm you since you're just starting out. These 5 sources are more than plenty while you get used to Twitter and build up your tweeting confidence.
